On April 25, thirty-eight students from eight high schools converged on Lake George Regional Park to participate in our regional Maine Envirothon, a demonstration of knowledge and passion for environmental issues.
The participating schools included Mt. Ararat High School, Ecology Learning Center, Maine Academy of Natural Sciences (two teams), Community Regional Charter School-Overman Academy, Massabesic High School RSU 57 ( two teams), and Waterville High School.
The Maine Envirothon is a hands-on educational competition designed for high school students and challenges teams to think critically about the natural world and their role in it. Teams work together to develop solutions to environmental challenges, guided by a curriculum that covers aquatics, forestry, wildlife, soils, and current environmental issues. At the Envirothon, students grow their critical thinking and problem-solving skills, gain valuable team experience, and deepen their understanding and appreciation of the environment and sustainable practices.
This year, the event was made possible by the generous sponsorship of the Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCD) of Kennebec, Knox/Lincoln, Waldo, and Somerset Counties. The invaluable contributions of our gracious volunteers from various environmental agencies, including the Somerset SWCD Board of Directors, USDA - Natural Resource Conservation Service Employees, State of Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, Maine Forest Service District Foresters, MidCoast Conservancy, and the Kennebec SWCD Board Supervisor, added significant value to the event and enhanced the overall atmosphere.
All eight teams worked hard and creatively to complete challenges, showcasing the diversity of ideas that come from collaboration. Mt. Ararat High School came in first place, Waterville High School took second place, and the Maine Academy of Natural Sciences Team #1 rounded out the competition with third.
We are thrilled to announce that the top teams will now advance to the State Envirothon, which is set to take place on Friday, May 31 at the Quarry Road Trails in Waterville. We look forward to another exciting competition!
Congratulations to all the students, advisors, and volunteers who made this year's regional competitions a success. Here’s to another year of inspiring environmental stewardship and education!
