The Somerset County Soil & Water Conservation District had a year of steady leadership, impactful programs, and meaningful partnerships in 2024. Under the guidance of Executive Director Jennifer Hebert, the District continued to serve landowners across Somerset County while expanding conservation efforts.
Notable achievements include the planting of 25 American Chestnut trees in the Yankee Woodlot, hosting the 2024 MidCoast Envirothon, and securing a $12,500 funding increase from the Department of Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry to strengthen conservation initiatives. The Ag Allies program thrived, helping to manage over 2,500 acres for grassland birds and supporting the fledging of an estimated 1,200–3,000 Bobolinks statewide.
Jenn's active participation in conferences and outreach events helped promote the District's mission, while new marketing efforts, led by MXH Marketing, expanded our reach to local landowners. The District also hosted successful workshops on apple tree pruning, fruit tree grafting, water quality best practices for backyard farmers, and pond construction and maintenance.
